Tata BP Solar India Limited received the ‘Golden Peacock Award for Occupational Health & Safety for the year 2011’ from Hon’ble Sri P. Chidambaram, Minister for Home Affairs, Govt. of India, on 24 June 2011 in New Delhi in the presence of distinguished gathering of business leaders, jurists, academics, environmentalists, economists, legislators and policy makers. The award was instituted by IOD (Institute of Directors)and jury headed by Justice P N Bhagwati , former Chief Justice of India and Member, UN Human Rights Commission.
While giving away the award to Ramamoorthy S, Head of HSSE in Tata BP Solar , Hon’ble Minister opined that Solar Products are going to rule the future and conveyed best wishes to  Tata BP Solar.

At a special session during the event, Ram made a brief presentation on the initiatives and achievements of Tata BP Solar in the field of occupational health & safety.

Close on the heels of emerging as the first company to have installed and commissioned a megawatt scale solar power plant under the Rooftop and Other Small Solar Power Generation Plant scheme administered by IREDA under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM), Tata BP Solar is implementing a 5MW Engineering, Procurement and Construction Project for Electrical Manufacturing Company, Kolkata to be operational by Dec 2011 under the NTPC – NVVN scheme of JNNSM.

This project at Naini, Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, uses 24,530 nos. crystalline silicon modules spread out over an area of 25 acres. These modules will generate electric current when solar radiation falls on them. This DC (direct current) electricity will be converted to AC (alternating current) through inverters and upgraded to 33 KV via transformers so that it is fed into the electricity grid lines of nominated Discoms under Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited at 33 KV. Tata BP Solar has also taken the contract to provide the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) services to the plant for the first 10 years after commissioning. The plant is designed to run for 25 years and the crystalline silicon modules manufactured and supplied by Tata BP are guaranteed to perform for this period of 25 years with minimal degradation in the power output over the long life time.

Tata BP Solar India Ltd, a joint venture of Tata Power and BP Solar, is the pioneer and market leader in India.  Tata BP Solar is currently executing more than 15 major projects in different parts of India including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Orissa, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and  Rajasthan.

The JNNSM is a flagship project of the Indian government to mainstream the use of solar energy and has galvanised the industry by setting out an ambitious target of installing 20000 MW of grid-connected solar power generation capacity by 2022 in addition to 2000 MW of off grid solar power. Out of this, 1100 MW grid connected solar power capacity is to be installed in the first phase ending in March 2013. Nearly 800 MW of this has already been allocated.

Tata BP Solar India Ltd, a joint venture of Tata Power and BP Solar, has lived up to its reputation as the pioneer and market leader in India and is the first company to have installed and commissioned a megawatt scale solar power plant in the co-operative sector under the Rooftop and Other Small Solar Power Generation Plant scheme administered by IREDA under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM).

This milestone project is owned and developed by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd (BASSKL), Arvindnagar, Osmanabad in Maharashtra. The one megawatt plant was inaugurated on 31 July 2011 by Hon’ble Central Minister for New & Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah in the presence of Hon’ble Dy Chief Minister of Maharasthra, Shri Ajit Pawar and other luminaries.  Shri R V Shinde, Managing Director and Shri A J Gore, Founder Chairman, BASSKL were present.

Commenting on this momentous occasion, Mr K Subramanya, CEO, Tata BP Solar, said:  “This one Mega Watt project is another important milestone towards achieving the solar mission goal of India. Tata BP Solar team as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor worked hard and in tandem with the BASSKL team to put up a state-of-the-art Solar Power plant.”

This project uses 4400 number of crystalline silicon modules of 230 Watts each spread out over an area of 4.5 acres. These modules will generate electric current when solar radiation falls on them. This DC (direct current) electricity will be converted to AC (alternating current) using solar inverters and energy is exported to Maharashtra Electricity Board through compact substation. The solar power plant will generate 1.56 million units of electricity per year. Tata BP Solar has also taken the contract to provide the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) services to the plant for the first 10 years after commissioning. The plant is designed to run for 25 years and the crystalline silicon modules manufactured and supplied by Tata BP are guaranteed to perform for this period of 25 years with minimal degradation in the power output over the long life time.

Tata BP Solar has been able to secure a number of EPC contracts in the IREDA- run scheme and is currently executing around 15 such projects in different parts of India including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Orissa, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand.
